The East Slovak Ironworks (Východoslovenské železiarne, VSŽ) were founded on 1 April 1959 and building began at Šaca, south-west of Košice, in 1960. The first rolled sheet came off in 1964 and the first blast furnace and first steel in 1965. It was a political decision as much as an industrial one: the communist government meant to industrialise the poorest, most agricultural corner of the country in one move, and it designed the plant around iron ore railed in from the Soviet Union. To avoid reloading every trainload at the border, a Russian-gauge railway — 1520 mm instead of the European 1435 — was laid nearly a hundred kilometres from the frontier to Haniska beside the works. It is still there, still freight-only, and it is the westernmost broad gauge in the European Union.Východoslovenské železiarne (VSŽ) vznikli 1. apríla 1959 a výstavba sa v Šaci juhozápadne od Košíc začala v roku 1960. Prvý zvitok plechu zišiel z valcovne v roku 1964, prvá vysoká pec a prvá oceľ prišli v roku 1965. Bolo to rovnako politické ako priemyselné rozhodnutie: komunistická vláda chcela jedným ťahom zindustrializovať najchudobnejší, najviac poľnohospodársky kút krajiny a závod postavila na železnej rude privážanej zo Sovietskeho zväzu. Aby sa nemusel každý vlak na hranici prekladať, položili od hranice takmer sto kilometrov širokorozchodnej trate — 1520 mm namiesto európskych 1435 — až do Hanisky vedľa závodu. Stojí tam dodnes, vozí len náklad a je to najzápadnejší široký rozchod v Európskej únii.
