10 August 1804 A bishop of its ownVlastný biskup

On 10 August 1804 a papal bull carved a new diocese of Košice out of the enormous archdiocese of Eger, and the church of St Elisabeth — built four centuries earlier by a town, as a parish church — finally became a cathedral. That is why Slovaks call it the Dóm. A bishop's seat brought a seminary, a chapter, archives and a building programme, and it fixed Košice as the religious centre of the Catholic east just as Prešov was becoming the centre of the eastern-rite churches. The diocese was raised to an archdiocese on 31 March 1995, with Spiš and Rožňava under it.Dňa 10. augusta 1804 vyčlenila pápežská bula z obrovskej jágerskej arcidiecézy novú košickú diecézu a kostol svätej Alžbety — postavený o štyri storočia skôr mestom, a to ako farský — sa konečne stal katedrálou. Preto mu hovoríme Dóm. Biskupské sídlo prinieslo seminár, kapitulu, archívy aj stavebný ruch a upevnilo postavenie Košíc ako náboženského centra katolíckeho východu — práve v čase, keď sa Prešov stával centrom cirkví východného obradu. Dňa 31. marca 1995 bola diecéza povýšená na arcidiecézu so Spišom a Rožňavou pod sebou.
