1604 – 1606 A church taken, and an uprisingZabraný kostol a povstanie

During the sixteenth century most of Košice went over to the Reformation and St Elisabeth's became a Protestant church. In January 1604 the imperial general Giacomo Belgiojoso seized it back for the Catholics and shut the Lutheran congregation out of its own cathedral — a piece of high-handedness that, together with a treason case against a Protestant magnate, set off the first of the great anti-Habsburg uprisings under István Bocskai. Bocskai took Košice that November and made it his seat; he was elected Prince of Transylvania and of Hungary, and he died here on 29 December 1606. The settlement he had already negotiated, the Peace of Vienna of 1606, guaranteed religious freedom to the Hungarian nobility and the royal towns. That is the pattern for the next hundred years: a grievance in Košice, a rising in the east, and a compromise signed under pressure.V šestnástom storočí prešla väčšina Košíc na reformáciu a Dóm svätej Alžbety sa stal protestantským kostolom.
