In 1657 the bishop of Eger, Benedikt Kišdy, endowed a Jesuit academy in Košice, and in 1660 Emperor Leopold I confirmed it with the rights of a university — the Universitas Cassoviensis. It taught philosophy and theology, later law, and it came with a printing house, which mattered as much: for the next century almost everything printed in the north-east came off Košice presses. It was the third attempt at a university on the territory of today's Slovakia, after the short-lived Academia Istropolitana in Bratislava (1465) and Trnava (1635). When the Jesuit order was dissolved in 1773 the university was reduced to a royal academy, and the direct line was broken — but the habit of Košice being a school town survived, and the city's modern university, founded in 1959, took the name of the scholar Pavol Jozef Šafárik.V roku 1657 založil jágerský biskup Benedikt Kišdy v Košiciach jezuitskú akadémiu a v roku 1660 jej cisár Leopold I. potvrdil práva univerzity — Universitas Cassoviensis.
