The front came to eastern Slovakia in the autumn of 1944, forced through the Carpathians at Dukla at enormous cost, and ground west through the winter. Soviet troops entered Košice on 19 January 1945, the same day they reached Prešov; the German and Hungarian forces pulled back westwards and the city, unlike Warsaw or Budapest, came through the fighting largely intact. Six years of Hungarian rule ended, Czechoslovak administration returned, and Košice found itself in a strange position — the biggest liberated city in a country whose capital was still hundreds of kilometres inside German lines. That accident of geography is why the next three months matter so much.Front prišiel na východné Slovensko na jeseň 1944, cez Karpaty sa prebil pri Dukle za obrovských strát a celú zimu sa mlel na západ. Sovietske vojská vstúpili do Košíc 19. januára 1945, v ten istý deň, keď dorazili do Prešova; nemecké a maďarské jednotky ustúpili na západ a mesto — na rozdiel od Varšavy či Budapešti — prešlo bojmi väčšinou nepoškodené. Šesť rokov maďarskej správy sa skončilo, vrátila sa československá správa a Košice sa ocitli v zvláštnom postavení: najväčšie oslobodené mesto krajiny, ktorej hlavné mesto ležalo ešte stovky kilometrov za nemeckými líniami. Práve táto geografická náhoda robí nasledujúce tri mesiace takými dôležitými.
