The last and largest of the uprisings, led by Francis II Rákóczi, ran from 1703 to 1711, and from 1704 Košice was his main base: his headquarters, his diets, his mint and his administration were here. It ended in defeat, and in the settlement of Szatmár in 1711 the rebels kept their lives and their estates while Vienna kept the throne. The consequence for Košice arrived two years later. In 1713 the Habsburgs demolished the citadel, and over the following century the town's medieval walls and gates were taken down as well. If you wonder today why a city with such a military past has almost no fortifications left, the answer is not a Turkish army: it is a government making sure the place could never be held against it again. The surviving Executioner's Bastion on Hrnčiarska is one of the few pieces left.Posledné a najväčšie z povstaní, ktoré viedol František II. Rákoci, trvalo od roku 1703 do roku 1711 a od roku 1704 boli Košice jeho hlavnou základňou: sídlil tu jeho hlavný stan, snemy, mincovňa aj správa. Skončilo sa porážkou a Satmárskym mierom z roku 1711, v ktorom si povstalci ponechali životy a majetky a Viedeň trón. Dôsledok pre Košice prišiel o dva roky neskôr. V roku 1713 dali Habsburgovci citadelu zbúrať a v priebehu nasledujúceho storočia padli aj stredoveké hradby a brány. Ak sa dnes niekto čuduje, prečo mesto s takou vojenskou minulosťou nemá takmer nijaké opevnenie, odpoveďou nie je turecké vojsko, ale vláda, ktorá sa postarala, aby sa toto miesto už nikdy nedalo držať proti nej. Zachovaná Katova bašta na Hrnčiarskej ulici je jedným z mála zvyškov.
