Czechoslovakia was declared in Prague on 28 October 1918, but nobody in Košice had asked the city, and the border was still open to argument. On 11 December 1918 a group around Viktor Dvorčák proclaimed in Košice an Eastern Slovak Republic, on the theory that the people of Šariš and Zemplín spoke a separate "Slovjak" language and belonged with Hungary rather than with Prague. It had almost no support and no army, and it was over in weeks: Czechoslovak legionaries entered Košice on 29 December 1918. It is still worth knowing about, because it shows something students rarely see — that at the moment a border is drawn, the alternatives are still real to the people living there.Československo bolo vyhlásené v Prahe 28. októbra 1918, ale Košíc sa nikto nepýtal a o hranici sa ešte stále dalo hádať. Dňa 11. decembra 1918 vyhlásila skupina okolo Viktora Dvorčáka v Košiciach Východoslovenskú republiku — s tvrdením, že ľudia zo Šariša a Zemplína hovoria osobitným „slovjackym“ jazykom a patria skôr k Uhorsku než k Prahe. Nemala takmer nijakú podporu ani vojsko a skončila sa za pár týždňov: 29. decembra 1918 vstúpili do Košíc československí legionári. Aj tak stojí za to o nej vedieť, lebo ukazuje niečo, čo žiaci vidia málokedy — že vo chvíli, keď sa kreslí hranica, sú iné možnosti pre tamojších ľudí ešte celkom skutočné.
