In the 1670s the Habsburgs built a five-sided citadel just south of Košice, and it is honest to say it was aimed at the townspeople as much as at any enemy: after decades of Protestant revolt Vienna wanted a garrison that could fire into the town as well as out of it. In November 1677 captured leaders of the rebellion were executed here. Then in 1682 Imre Thököly took the city and ruled his short-lived principality of Upper Hungary from it — as a vassal of the Ottoman sultan, which is exactly how complicated this century was. After the Ottoman defeat at Vienna in 1683 the tide turned, and on 18 October 1685 an imperial army under Aeneas Caprara retook Košice by siege. Note who did the besieging: Habsburg troops, not Turkish ones. In this city the phrase "destroyed by the Turks" explains nothing at all.V sedemdesiatych rokoch 17. storočia postavili Habsburgovci južne od Košíc päťuholnú citadelu a treba povedať otvorene, že mierila na mešťanov rovnako ako na nepriateľa: po desaťročiach protestantských vzbúr chcela Viedeň posádku, ktorá dokáže strieľať aj do mesta, nielen z neho. V novembri 1677 tu popravili zajatých vodcov povstania. V roku 1682 mesto obsadil Imrich Thököly a vládol z neho svojmu krátko trvajúcemu hornouhorskému kniežatstvu — ako vazal osmanského sultána, presne tak zamotané to storočie bolo. Po osmanskej porážke pri Viedni v roku 1683 sa karta obrátila a 18. októbra 1685 dobylo Košice obliehaním cisárske vojsko pod velením Aenea Capraru. Všimnime si, kto obliehal: habsburské vojsko, nie turecké. V tomto meste veta „zničili to Turci“ nevysvetľuje vôbec nič.
