The TatrasTatry

The granite core of the Tatras is far older than any human story, but the shape you photograph is not. Ice-age glaciers ground out the deep U-shaped valleys, scooped the hollows that now hold the plesá — the mountain tarns — and left the sharp ridges standing between them. People were in the country below: at Gánovce in the Poprad basin a warm mineral spring built up a mound of travertine that set around the skull of a Neanderthal and preserved a stone cast of the inside of the braincase, one of the oldest human traces in Slovakia. Nobody, then or for a very long time afterwards, lived in the mountains themselves. That is the first thing to understand about the Tatras: they were somewhere you looked at, not somewhere you were.Žulové jadro Tatier je oveľa staršie než akékoľvek ľudské dejiny, ale tvar, ktorý dnes fotíte, taký starý nie je. Ľadovce doby ľadovej vyhĺbili hlboké doliny tvaru U, vybrúsili kotly, v ktorých dnes ležia plesá, a medzi nimi nechali stáť ostré hrebene.
