2005 – 2013 The beetle, and the argument about what to doLykožrút a spor o to, čo ďalej

The TatrasTatry

What followed the storm was slower and in the end took more trees. Fallen spruce is a breeding ground for the bark beetle, and between 2005 and 2013 more than 2,250,000 further trees died in the Tatras from beetle attack. What to do about it split foresters, scientists and conservationists, and the disagreement is genuine rather than political theatre: clearing the dead wood removes the beetles' nursery, but it also strips the ground, kills the seedlings already coming up and takes decades of nutrients out of the forest. In 2012 the Environment Ministry banned logging in the Tichá and Kôprová valleys and rejected the state forest company's appeal on 27 June, leaving those two valleys to recover by themselves. Twenty years on you can still read the whole argument from the train window.
