While the kingdom tore itself apart in the anti-Habsburg uprisings, the Tatras acquired something they had never had: publicity. Daniel Speer, a German musician who lived in the sub-Tatra towns for about six years, published in 1683 an adventure book about Hungary that includes a climb in these mountains made in 1654. He printed it anonymously, and it is impossible to know how much of it he did himself and how much he collected from other people — exactly the sort of problem historians deal with all the time. What matters is the effect. Nasledujúcich sto rokov bola jeho kniha jedným z mála miest, kde sa niekto mimo Uhorska vôbec mohol dočítať, že tieto hory existujú.
