The TatrasTatry
1793 gave the Tatras both of the things they now live on. The landowner Štefan Csáky built a hunting lodge beside an acidic mineral spring on the southern slope, and by 1797 had added three wooden houses and a chapel: that handful of buildings became Starý Smokovec, the first resort in the range. And on 16 August of the same year the British naturalist Robert Townson climbed Lomnický štít and measured it with a mercury barometer at 2,644 metres — about ten metres over, which for that equipment is impressive. A spring to drink from and a peak to measure: the cure and the climb. Everything on this slope for the next two hundred years follows from one or the other.
