The TatrasTatry

In 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian king's forces at the river Slaná and rode across the kingdom. You will read in guidebooks that this or that castle was destroyed by the Mongols — be careful with that sentence, because most Slovak stone castles were built because of 1241, in the decades after it, when Béla IV rebuilt the country around stone. The Tatras have no siege story at all: there was nothing up there to besiege, and the written record for the range in that year is simply silent. What the invasion did here, it did in the basin below, where the king confirmed and privileged the Spiš towns and pushed settlement back into a region that had been thinly held.V roku 1241 rozdrvilo mongolské vojsko uhorské sily pri rieke Slanej a prehnalo sa kráľovstvom. Tatry nemajú príbeh o obliehaní vôbec: hore nebolo čo obliehať a písomné pramene o pohorí v tom roku mlčia. Čo vpád urobil, urobil v kotline pod horami — kráľ tam potvrdil a obdaril výsadami spišské mestá a znovu posunul osídlenie do kraja, ktorý bol dovtedy riedko obsadený.
