A law passed on 18 December 1948 created the Tatra National Park — TANAP — with effect from 1 January 1949, covering the High Tatras, the Belianske Tatry and, from 1987, part of the Western Tatras. It was the first national park in Slovakia, and Poland created its own on the other side of the ridge in 1954. Today the Slovak park protects about 738 square kilometres, with a further 307 as a buffer zone. The contradiction that runs through its entire history began at once: the same state that declared the park also wanted hotels, ski runs and cable cars inside it. Every argument in the Tatras since has been a version of that one.Zákon prijatý 18. decembra 1948 zriadil s účinnosťou od 1. januára 1949 Tatranský národný park — TANAP —, ktorý zahŕňa Vysoké Tatry, Belianske Tatry a od roku 1987 aj časť Západných Tatier. Bol to prvý národný park na Slovensku; Poľsko si svoj na druhej strane hrebeňa zriadilo v roku 1954. Dnes slovenský park chráni asi 738 štvorcových kilometrov a ďalších 307 tvorí ochranné pásmo. Rozpor, ktorý sa tiahne celými jeho dejinami, sa objavil hneď: ten istý štát, ktorý park vyhlásil, chcel v ňom aj hotely, zjazdovky a lanovky. Každý spor v Tatrách je odvtedy verziou tohto jedného.
