The TatrasTatry
Around June 1615 a young Kežmarok student named David Frölich climbed Kežmarský štít with two companions and then wrote the climb down — the first ascent of a Tatra peak described by the person who made it. His account is not a list of altitudes but a piece of astonishment: he says the rock towers here are wilder and steeper than the Alps, describes the fields of huge boulders and the thin air, and reports that when he fired his gun on the summit the shot was almost silent at first and then rolled back enormously loud out of the valleys below. He was wrong about why, but he had noticed something real. For a long time his was the only first-hand description of the high Tatras in existence.
