The Ottoman centuryOsmanské storočie
The TatrasTatry
The Ottoman wars that dominate the sixteenth century almost everywhere else in the kingdom never reached these mountains — one of the few places in Slovakia where that sentence is simply true. What the century brought here instead was prospecting. Gold and antimony were dug on the slopes of Kriváň: Valent Mark opened a mine there in 1550 and Fraňo Šurba worked several shafts from 1564, but the veins were poor, the local lords made trouble, and the workings were abandoned before the century ended. Around the real mining grew a great deal of legend — stories of Venetians, mysterious prospectors from the south who supposedly knew where the gold and the crystals lay. Those stories are folklore, not history; the mining records are the part you can stand on.Osmanské vojny, ktoré 16. storočie inde v kráľovstve úplne ovládli, sa do týchto hôr nikdy nedostali — je to jedno z mála miest na Slovensku, kde táto veta platí bez výhrad. Storočie sem namiesto toho prinieslo prospektorov. Na svahoch Kriváňa sa dolovalo zlato a antimón: Valent Mark tam otvoril baňu v roku 1550 a Fraňo Šurba ťažil od roku 1564 vo viacerých štôlňach, žily však boli chudobné, miestni páni robili prieky a bane zanikli ešte pred koncom storočia. Okolo skutočného baníctva narástlo množstvo povestí — rozprávania o Benátčanoch, záhadných hľadačoch z juhu, ktorí vraj vedeli, kde leží zlato a kryštály. Tie príbehy sú folklór, nie dejiny; oprieť sa dá o banské záznamy.
