The TatrasTatry
More visitors meant more accidents, and on 28 December 1913 the doctors and mountaineers of the Tatra settlements founded the Tatra Voluntary Rescue Committee under the physician Michal Guhr, with Alfred Grosz, Július Andreas Hefty and Dezider Reichart among the first volunteers. They were unpaid men with ropes and stretchers who went out when somebody did not come back. The committee stopped work in 1916: the First World War took the volunteers, emptied the hotels and ended the boom that had built the settlements. Rescue in the Tatras would not be organised again until 1950 — but it has never since been left entirely to luck.
