The TatrasTatry
The one place in the Tatras where industry took hold was Javorina, on the northern side of the Belianske Tatry. The Horváth family set up iron foundries there in 1759, using local ore, local charcoal and the water of the mountain streams; the Salomon family enlarged the works in 1837 and later turned them into a cardboard mill, which eventually closed. It is a small story with a large lesson attached: charcoal for a foundry means cutting forest, and the Tatra woods that later generations argued about protecting had already been worked hard for two centuries before anybody thought of a national park. In 1879 the whole estate was bought by Prince Christian Kraft Hohenlohe, and its future turned from iron to game.
