The TatrasTatry

In 1412 King Sigismund needed money for a war against Venice and pawned thirteen Spiš towns to the Polish crown as security, and with them the towns of Podolínec, Stará Ľubovňa and Hniezdne. Neither he nor any successor redeemed the pledge for three hundred and sixty years, so the towns immediately below the Tatras — Poprad, Spišská Sobota, Veľká, Matejovce, Stráže — spent that whole time administered from Poland while the countryside around them stayed Hungarian. Maria Theresa finally took them back in 1772. Sit with the arithmetic for a moment: a child born in one of those towns in 1420, and twelve generations of their descendants, lived under an arrangement that was always described as temporary.
