Slovakia became an independent state on 1 January 1993 and the Tatras stayed exactly where they were, which is the useful thing about mountains. What changed was the meaning of the border. The Slovak and Polish national parks were recognised together as a single cross-border biosphere reserve under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere programme in the early 1990s — sources give 1992 and February 1993 — so the range is now managed as one piece of nature from two capitals. On 21 December 2007 both countries entered the Schengen area and the checks on the crossings ended. The ridge is still a state border; for a walker it is now a signpost.Slovensko sa 1. januára 1993 stalo samostatným štátom a Tatry zostali presne tam, kde boli — v tom sú hory užitočné. Zmenil sa význam hranice. Slovenský a poľský národný park uznali začiatkom 90. rokov spoločne za jednu cezhraničnú biosférickú rezerváciu v programe UNESCO Človek a biosféra (pramene uvádzajú rok 1992 aj február 1993), takže pohorie sa dnes spravuje ako jeden kus prírody z dvoch hlavných miest. 21. decembra 2007 vstúpili obe krajiny do schengenského priestoru a kontroly na priechodoch sa skončili. Hrebeň je stále štátnou hranicou; pre turistu je to dnes rázcestník.
