At the end of 2025 Banská Štiavnica had 9,208 inhabitants — against 23,192 in 1782. That is the whole arc in two numbers, and it is why the streets feel too grand for the town in them. It lives now on what it used to be: museums, the mining museum where you go underground in a helmet, restoration work, schools, tourism and festivals, busy in summer and quiet in winter. On 18 March 2023 a fire in the historic centre damaged seven buildings and reminded everyone how fragile a town of old roofs on a steep slope is. Repairing them is the same job the town has been doing since 1993, and will be doing for a long time yet.Na konci roka 2025 mala Banská Štiavnica 9 208 obyvateľov — oproti 23 192 v roku 1782. To je celý oblúk v dvoch číslach a aj dôvod, prečo sú tie ulice na dnešné mesto akoby priveľké. Žije z toho, čím kedysi bola: z múzeí, z banského múzea, kde sa s prilbou zostupuje pod zem, z obnovy pamiatok, zo škôl, z cestovného ruchu a z festivalov — v lete rušne, v zime ticho. Osemnásteho marca 2023 poškodil požiar v historickom jadre sedem budov a všetkým pripomenul, aké krehké je mesto starých striech na strmom svahu. Ich oprava je tá istá práca, ktorú mesto robí od roku 1993 a bude robiť ešte dlho.
