After 1989 the state stopped paying for mines that could not pay for themselves, and ore mining in the Štiavnica district came to an end in the early 1990s. It is worth being clear about what ended: not the geology — there is still gold and silver in these hills — but the economics of getting it out. Eight hundred years of work stopped inside a few seasons, leaving the town with empty shafts, a shrinking population, houses in poor repair and one genuine asset: the fact that all of it, the mines and the tajchy and the tilted square, had survived because nobody had had the money to knock it down.Po roku 1989 štát prestal doplácať na bane, ktoré sa neuživili, a ťažba rudy v štiavnickom revíri sa začiatkom deväťdesiatych rokov skončila. Stojí za to povedať, čo sa vlastne skončilo: nie geológia — zlato a striebro v týchto vrchoch stále sú — ale ekonomika ich dobývania. Osemsto rokov práce prestalo v priebehu pár sezón a mestu zostali prázdne šachty, ubúdajúci počet obyvateľov, domy v zlom stave a jedno naozajstné bohatstvo: to všetko — bane, tajchy aj šikmé námestie — sa zachovalo práve preto, že nikdy nebolo z čoho to zbúrať.
