The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
Banská ŠtiavnicaBanská Štiavnica
In April 1241 the Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian royal host at Muhi and spent the following year riding through the kingdom. Whether it reached this valley is not recorded in the sources this page rests on, and it is worth saying so plainly: the town's charter is from 1238, three years before the invasion, so Štiavnica was already a mining town when the Mongols came. What is certain is what came afterwards. King Béla IV rebuilt his kingdom in stone and invited settlers who could pay for it, and German miners were exactly the settlers he wanted — the century after 1241 is when the mining towns of central Slovakia grew into the richest places in the country.V apríli 1241 rozdrvilo mongolské vojsko uhorskú kráľovskú armádu pri Muhi a nasledujúci rok sa preháňalo kráľovstvom. Kráľ Belo IV. obnovoval krajinu v kameni a pozýval osadníkov, ktorí to dokázali zaplatiť — a nemeckí baníci boli presne tí, o ktorých stál. Storočie po roku 1241 je časom, keď sa stredoslovenské banské mestá stali najbohatšími miestami v krajine.
