Machinery like that has to be taught, so teaching followed it. A mining school opened here in 1735 with Samuel Mikovíni as its first professor; in 1762 Vienna decided to raise it into an academy for the whole monarchy; teaching in the new form began in 1763 under the chemist and botanist Nicolaus Joseph von Jacquin, and Maria Theresa's statute of 1770 fixed a three-year course and the name Mining Academy. It was the first institution anywhere in the world to teach mining and metallurgy as sciences, in laboratories where the students did the experiments with their own hands instead of only listening — a method other technical schools in Europe copied. A forestry institute was added in 1807, and by the 1840s the school was an Academy of Mining and Forestry. For over a century students came here from across the continent to learn inside a working mining district, which is the whole point: the classroom was the mine.Takéto stroje sa niekto musí naučiť obsluhovať — a tak po strojoch prišlo vyučovanie. Roku 1735 tu vznikla banská škola a jej prvým profesorom bol Samuel Mikovíni; roku 1762 rozhodla Viedeň povýšiť ju na akadémiu pre celú monarchiu, v novej podobe sa začalo učiť roku 1763 pod vedením chemika a botanika Mikuláša Jozefa Jacquina a štatút Márie Terézie z roku 1770 určil trojročné štúdium a názov Banícka akadémia. Bola prvou školou na svete, ktorá učila baníctvo a hutníctvo ako vedu — v laboratóriách, kde si študenti pokusy robili vlastnými rukami, nielen ich počúvali. Tento spôsob výučby preberali ďalšie technické školy v Európe. Roku 1807 pribral ústav lesníctvo a v štyridsiatych rokoch 19. storočia už išlo o Banícku a lesnícku akadémiu. Vyše storočia sem chodili študenti z celého kontinentu učiť sa priamo v činnom rudnom revíri — v tom je celý vtip: učebňou bola baňa.
