Silver, gold and the HronStriebro, zlato a Hron
The heart of this region is a belt of ore. Banská Štiavnica took silver out of a volcanic caldera and Kremnica took gold out of the hills above the Hron, and both were rich enough to buy privileges, build stone squares and endow schools centuries before there was any such thing as Slovak industry. Kremnica's mint has struck coin since 1328 and has never once stopped; Štiavnica's mining academy, founded in 1762, taught students from across Europe how to sink a shaft and drain it.Srdcom tohto kraja je pás rudy. The Hron ties the belt together. It rises under the Low Tatras, runs west through Brezno, Banská Bystrica and Zvolen, then turns south past Žiar nad Hronom, and almost every town of the region's middle sits on it or on a stream that feeds it. Where the ore ran out the twentieth century put something heavy in its place — an aluminium smelter at Žiar, steel tubes at Podbrezová, sawmills and wood plants at Zvolen — so the valley reads as two industrial ages laid one on top of the other.Pás spája Hron. The frontier south and the volcanic hillsPohraničný juh a sopečné vrchy
South of the watershed the region changes completely. Novohrad and the western edge of Gemer are warm, low, volcanic country, and in the sixteenth century they were the front line of the Ottoman wars: Fiľakovo fell in 1554 and was the seat of an Ottoman sanjak for thirty-nine years, and the castles at Divín, Modrý Kameň, Šomoška and Čabraď exist because of that war. Lučenec and Rimavská Sobota grew afterwards as county seats — market and administrative towns rather than fortresses.Južne od rozvodia sa kraj úplne mení. Novohrad a západný okraj Gemera sú teplá, nízka sopečná krajina a v šestnástom storočí boli prvou líniou tureckých vojen: Fiľakovo padlo v roku 1554 a tridsaťdeväť rokov bolo sídlom osmanského sandžaku a hrady Divín, Modrý Kameň, Šomoška či Čabraď existujú práve pre túto vojnu. Lučenec a Rimavská Sobota vyrástli až potom ako stoličné sídla — trhové a správne mestá, nie pevnosti.
Between the two halves lies Podpoľanie, the country under the volcanic dome of Poľana, where Detva was settled late, kept its folk culture longer than anywhere else and still farms hillside hamlets called lazy. The southern belt is the part of the region the economy of the last thirty years has treated worst. That is worth saying plainly, because it explains the streets.Medzi oboma polovicami leží Podpoľanie, kraj pod sopečnou klenbou Poľany, kde Detvu osadili neskoro, ľudovú kultúru si udržala dlhšie než ktorékoľvek iné miesto a dodnes sa tu hospodári na lazoch. Južný pás je tá časť kraja, s ktorou hospodárstvo posledných tridsiatich rokov naložilo najhoršie. Oplatí sa to povedať priamo, lebo to vysvetľuje, ako tie mestá vyzerajú.

Museum and castle opening changes with the season, several of the frontier ruins are free-access hilltops with no facilities at all, and branch-line timetables in the south are thin — confirm directly before you travel.Nie je to rezervačná služba.
