Until the seventeenth century a miner broke rock with a hammer, a chisel and fire — you lit a fire against the face, let it crack the stone, and cleared the mess. In 1627 gunpowder was used to blast rock in a Štiavnica mine, one of the first times anywhere in the world; Slovak accounts name a Tyrolean, Kašpar Weindl. A tunnel that had advanced a hand's breadth a week could now advance metres, so the mines went deeper and faster — and the deeper they went, the more water they met. The invention that made the town rich is also the invention that gave it the problem the next hundred years were spent solving.Až do 17. storočia rozpájal baník horninu kladivom, želiezkom a ohňom — pri čelbe sa založil oheň, kameň popraskal a potom sa vyrúbal. A čím hlbšie šli, tým viac vody v nich bolo. Vynález, ktorý mesto obohatil, mu zároveň nadelil problém, ktorého riešeniu venovalo celé ďalšie storočie.
