In 1681 the town built the Klopačka, a small tower with a wooden clapper inside it. Its knocking woke the miners and called them to the shift; it also called them to assemblies and announced a death in the pits, so everyone in the valley knew what had happened before the news did. Nine years later, in 1690, the mines had the best year in their whole recorded history: 605 kilograms of gold and 29,000 kilograms of silver in twelve months.
