The Kingdom of HungaryUhorské kráľovstvo
Banská ŠtiavnicaBanská Štiavnica
A document of 1156 calls this place terra banensium — the land of the miners. That is a fact about a charter, not about when people arrived; the mining was older than the parchment. Written proof of silver being raised here follows in 1217, and in 1238 the king granted the settlement the rights of a royal town, among the very first in the Kingdom of Hungary to get them. Settlers came from Tyrol and Saxony because they knew ore, which is why the town has three names in the records — Slovak Štiavnica, German Schemnitz, Hungarian Selmecbánya — for one place on one hill.Listina z roku 1156 nazýva toto miesto terra banensium — zem baníkov. Je to však údaj o listine, nie o tom, odkedy tu ľudia žijú; baníctvo bolo staršie ako pergamen. Písomný doklad o ťažbe striebra pribúda roku 1217 a roku 1238 udelil kráľ osade práva slobodného kráľovského mesta — ako jednej z úplne prvých v Uhorsku. Osadníci prichádzali z Tirolska a zo Saska, lebo rozumeli rude; preto má mesto v prameňoch tri mená — slovenskú Štiavnicu, nemecký Schemnitz a maďarskú Selmecbányu — pre jedno miesto na jednom kopci.
