1443 The earthquakeZemetrasenie

In 1443 a destructive earthquake struck the town and much of it had to be built again from the ground up — one reason so little of the medieval fabric survives under the Renaissance houses you see today. These were bad decades for the kingdom anyway: there was no undisputed king, and Czech captains under Ján Jiskra held much of what is now central Slovakia with their garrisons. Underground the trouble was different and more permanent. The good ore near the surface was worked out, the shafts went deeper, and below a certain depth they filled with water faster than men and horses could lift it out.Roku 1443 zasiahlo mesto ničivé zemetrasenie a veľkú časť bolo treba postaviť nanovo — aj preto sa pod renesančnými domami, ktoré vidíme dnes, zachovalo tak málo stredovekého muriva. Boli to aj inak zlé desaťročia: kráľovstvo nemalo nespochybniteľného kráľa a veľkú časť dnešného stredného Slovenska držali posádky českých veliteľov Jána Jiskru. Pod zemou bol problém iný a trvalejší. Dobrá ruda pri povrchu sa vyrúbala, šachty šli hlbšie — a od istej hĺbky sa plnili vodou rýchlejšie, než ju stačili ľudia a kone vyťahovať von.
