Kremnica sits in a narrow valley in the Kremnica Mountains, north of Žiar nad Hronom and roughly halfway between the Hron and the Turiec basin. The town is small and tightly built, the hills come down to the last houses, and everything above the roofs is forest.Kremnica leží v úzkej doline Kremnických vrchov, severne od Žiaru nad Hronom a zhruba na polceste medzi Pohroním a Turčianskou kotlinou. A few kilometres up the road, the village church at Kremnické Bane carries a marker for the geographical centre of Europe. The storyHistória

Gold brought the town into being. Charles Robert of Anjou granted Kremnica town privileges in 1328 and founded a mint here in the same year, and for the next two centuries the Kremnica ducat was among the most trusted coins in Europe, struck from local gold at a purity that others were measured against.Mesto priviedlo na svet zlato. The workings under the town went deep and were drained by long adits driven out into the valley. The town above them was walled, and the castle inside those walls was less a lord's seat than the townspeople's own strongpoint, with the parish church standing inside it. Kremnica belonged to the association of central Slovak mining towns and was, with Štiavnica, its richest member.Bane pod mestom siahali hlboko a odvodňovali ich dlhé dedičné štôlne razené von do doliny. The gold thinned out, but the mint never closed. It struck the coinage of the Kingdom of Hungary, then of Czechoslovakia, and it strikes Slovak euro coins today along with medals and commemorative issues for other countries — an unbroken run of nearly seven centuries.Zlato sa stenčilo, no mincovňa nezatvorila nikdy. What to seeČo vidieť

The town castle is the set piece: a walled precinct standing above the square, with the two-naved Gothic Church of St Catherine inside it, a round charnel chapel beside it, and a tower that can be climbed for the view down onto the roofs and out to the hills.Vizitkou je mestský hrad: opevnený areál nad námestím, v ňom dvojloďový gotický Kostol svätej Kataríny, vedľa neho okrúhly karner a veža, na ktorú sa dá vystúpiť za výhľadom na strechy a von do kopcov.

Below it the square holds a Trinity column and a run of burgher houses, several of them occupied by the Museum of Coins and Medals, run by the national bank — the natural place to see what the mint actually made. Skalka, the saddle above the town, is a small ski area in winter and a cross-country and walking centre for the rest of the year. Work and industryPráca a priemysel

The mint is the town's signature employer and still a state enterprise, working for the Slovak central bank and for foreign customers. Gold mining is finished, though the adits and workings remain part of the landscape and some are open to visitors.Mincovňa je príznačným zamestnávateľom mesta a dodnes štátnym podnikom, ktorý pracuje pre slovenskú centrálnu banku aj pre zahraničných zákazníkov. Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

The railway from Zvolen and Hronská Dúbrava to Vrútky climbs through Kremnica, and the approach by train up the wooded valley is unusually good. Buses run from Žiar nad Hronom and Banská Bystrica, and by car the town is reached on the road that leaves the Hron valley at Žiar.Železnica zo Zvolena a Hronskej Dúbravy do Vrútok stúpa cez Kremnicu a príchod vlakom zalesnenou dolinou je nezvyčajne pekný.
