KrupinaKrupina

One of the oldest royal towns in Slovakia, on the northern edge of the Krupina plateau, with a Renaissance watchtower on the hill above that now serves as an observatory, and the birthplace of the poet Andrej Sládkovič in its streets.

Where it standsKde leží

Krupina lies on the Krupinica where the Štiavnica hills give way to the Krupina plateau, about thirty kilometres south of Zvolen on the old road to Šahy and the Danube. It was the northern gateway to the historic county of Hont, and the country south of it — long flat-topped ridges cut by deep wooded ravines — is unlike anywhere else in Slovakia.

It is a small town, and its position between the mining country to the north and the old Ottoman frontier to the south explains most of its history.

The storyHistória

Krupina's town privileges date from the thirteenth century and are among the oldest granted anywhere in what is now Slovakia. German settlers were brought in, and for a time the town ranked with the mining towns to the north. It never grew rich the way they did — there was no silver here — but it kept its charter and its market.

The Ottoman wars put it on the front line. Raiding parties came up from the occupied south, the town fortified itself, and on the hill above it built the Vartovka, a stone watchtower from which a fire could warn the mining towns behind. That was Krupina's job for a century and a half.Turecké vojny ho postavili do prvej línie. Zo zabraného juhu prichádzali nájazdné oddiely, mesto sa opevnilo a na kopci nad sebou postavilo Vartovku — kamennú strážnu vežu, z ktorej mohol oheň varovať banské mestá za ňou. To bola úloha Krupiny poldruha storočia.

Andrej Sládkovič, one of the founding poets of modern Slovak literature, was born in Krupina in 1820. His long poem Detvan, set in the country a short way east of here, did as much as anything written in the nineteenth century to fix the image of the Slovak highlander in the national imagination.V Krupine sa v roku 1820 narodil Andrej Sládkovič, jeden zo zakladateľských básnikov modernej slovenskej literatúry.

What to seeČo vidieť

The Vartovka stands on the hill above the town, half an hour up on foot, and is fitted out today as a small observatory; the walk is worth it for the view over the plateau even when the tower is shut. Down in the town the square, the parish church with its Gothic core and the museum in Sládkovič's house make a short circuit. Dole v meste tvoria krátky okruh námestie, farský kostol s gotickým jadrom a múzeum v Sládkovičovom dome.

The country around is the real attraction. Bzovík, a few kilometres west, is a medieval monastery that was rebuilt as a bastioned fortress — a blunt, strange ruin standing alone above the fields. South of Krupina the ruin of Čabraď sits at the end of a valley track with no road to its gate at all, and the ravines of the plateau carry marked paths through rock walls and beech woods.

Work and industryPráca a priemysel

Krupina is a district town without a large industry. Agriculture on the plateau, forestry and timber, food processing and a scatter of small manufacturing firms account for most local work, and a good many people commute north to Zvolen and Banská Bystrica.Krupina je okresným mestom bez veľkého priemyslu. Väčšinu miestnej práce tvorí poľnohospodárstvo na planine, lesníctvo a drevárstvo, potravinárstvo a niekoľko malých výrobných firiem a nemálo ľudí dochádza na sever do Zvolena a Banskej Bystrice.

Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

The road from Zvolen to Šahy and the Hungarian border runs through the town and is the main approach; a railway follows the same corridor, but buses from Zvolen are the more practical option. Čabraď, Bzovík and the villages on the plateau need a car.
