Rimavská Sobota lies on the Rimava in the basin of the same name, in the western part of historic Gemer, roughly thirty kilometres east of Lučenec and not far from the Hungarian border. The Ore Mountains and the Muránska planina rise to the north; south of the town the country runs low and warm towards the frontier.Rimavská Sobota leží na Rimave v rovnomennej kotline, v západnej časti historického Gemera, zhruba tridsať kilometrov východne od Lučenca a neďaleko maďarskej hranice. Na severe sa dvíha Rudohorie a Muránska planina, južne od mesta sa krajina tiahne nízka a teplá k hranici.

Like Lučenec it is bilingual in daily life, and it is the administrative centre of a large district with very little industry in it.Podobne ako Lučenec je v bežnom živote dvojjazyčná a je správnym strediskom veľkého okresu s veľmi riedkym priemyslom.

The storyHistória

The town's name records what it was: a Saturday market. It grew where the roads of the Rimava valley met, served a wide arc of villages, and in the nineteenth century became the seat of the combined county of Gemer-Malohont — which is why a town of this size has public buildings scaled for something larger.Meno mesta hovorí, čím bolo: sobotným trhom. Vyrástlo tam, kde sa stretli cesty Rimavskej doliny, obsluhovalo široký oblúk dedín a v devätnástom storočí sa stalo sídlom spojenej Gemersko-malohontskej stolice — preto má mesto tejto veľkosti verejné budovy strihnuté na niečo väčšie.

The county museum was founded in the 1880s by a local learned society whose members collected archaeology, minerals, folk objects and antiquities from wherever they travelled. That is how an Egyptian mummy ended up in a small Slovak town, and it has been the museum's calling card ever since.Stoličné múzeum založil v osemdesiatych rokoch devätnásteho storočia miestny učený spolok, ktorého členovia zbierali archeológiu, minerály, ľudové predmety i starožitnosti odvšadiaľ, kam sa dostali. Tak sa egyptská múmia ocitla v malom slovenskom meste a odvtedy je vizitkou múzea.

Twentieth-century industry came late here and left early: food processing, engineering and building materials were built up after the war and thinned out sharply after 1989.Priemysel dvadsiateho storočia sem prišiel neskoro a odišiel skoro: potravinárstvo, strojárstvo a stavebné materiály tu po vojne vybudovali a po roku 1989 sa výrazne stenčili.

What to seeČo vidieť

The main square is the town's one big set piece — long, broad, planted with trees, lined with nineteenth-century houses and closed by the town hall. The museum stands on it, and an hour there is the most useful hour a visitor can spend in the district: Gemer archaeology, the county's history, the mummy, and the folk material of a region whose villages are emptying.Hlavné námestie je jedinou veľkou scénou mesta — dlhé, široké, vysadené stromami, lemované domami z devätnásteho storočia a uzavreté radnicou. Stojí na ňom múzeum a hodina v ňom je pre návštevníka najužitočnejšou hodinou v celom okrese: gemerská archeológia, dejiny stolice, múmia a ľudová kultúra kraja, ktorého dediny sa vyľudňujú.

Most people come this way for what is around it rather than for the town itself: the Muránska planina national park to the north, the Gothic village churches of Gemer with their medieval wall paintings scattered east and south, and the caves of the Slovak Karst beyond them.Väčšina ľudí sem však prichádza skôr pre okolie než pre samotné mesto: pre národný park Muránska planina na severe, pre gotické dedinské kostolíky Gemera so stredovekými nástennými maľbami roztrúsené na východ a juh a za nimi pre jaskyne Slovenského krasu.

The Rimava valley running north from the town is the other direction worth taking. It narrows steadily towards Tisovec and the cliffs at the edge of the Muránska planina, and the villages along it keep timber houses, small Gothic churches and a landscape of meadow and beech wood that has changed very little.Druhým smerom, ktorý stojí za cestu, je Rimavská dolina na sever od mesta. Postupne sa zužuje k Tisovcu a k bralám na okraji Muránskej planiny a obce v nej si zachovali drevenice, malé gotické kostolíky a krajinu lúk a bučín, ktorá sa zmenila len veľmi málo.

Work and industryPráca a priemysel

Food processing is the town's main industry — meat processing above all, which has been here for decades — with smaller engineering and building-materials plants around it, and the hospital, the schools and the district offices employing much of the rest.Hlavným priemyslom mesta je potravinárstvo — predovšetkým mäsopriemysel, ktorý tu pôsobí už desaťročia — okolo neho menšie strojárske závody a výroba stavebných hmôt a veľkú časť zvyšku zamestnáva nemocnica, školy a okresné úrady.

Unemployment in this district has been among the highest in the country for a long time, and many families depend on work elsewhere in Slovakia or abroad.Nezamestnanosť v tomto okrese patrí dlhodobo k najvyšším v krajine a mnohé rodiny závisia od práce inde na Slovensku alebo v zahraničí.

Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

Trains reach Rimavská Sobota on a branch from Jesenské on the Zvolen–Košice main line; the same branch runs on up the Rimava valley to Tisovec, where it carries the only standard-gauge rack-railway section in Slovakia, now worked mainly by heritage trains. Buses connect the town with Lučenec, Zvolen and Banská Bystrica.Vlaky prichádzajú do Rimavskej Soboty po odbočke z Jesenského na hlavnej trati Zvolen – Košice; tá istá trať pokračuje hore Rimavskou dolinou do Tisovca, kde sa na nej nachádza jediný ozubnicový úsek na normálnom rozchode na Slovensku, dnes využívaný najmä historickými vlakmi. Autobusy spájajú mesto s Lučencom, Zvolenom a Banskou Bystricou.
