Sliač sits on a travertine terrace above the Hron, about six kilometres north of Zvolen and some fifteen from Banská Bystrica, on the corridor that joins them. The spa occupies the wooded hill; the town below it was put together in the 1950s out of the older villages of Hájniky and Rybáre and the spa settlement between them.Sliač leží na travertínovej terase nad Hronom, asi šesť kilometrov severne od Zvolena a zhruba pätnásť od Banskej Bystrice, na koridore, ktorý ich spája. Kúpele zaberajú zalesnený kopec; mesto pod nimi vzniklo v päťdesiatych rokoch spojením starších obcí Hájniky a Rybáre a kúpeľnej osady medzi nimi.

The valley here is broad and open, with the Kremnické vrchy on one side and the Zvolen basin running east towards Poľana. The level ground by the river is where the airfield went.Dolina je tu široká a otvorená, na jednej strane s Kremnickými vrchmi, na druhej so Zvolenskou kotlinou, ktorá pokračuje na východ k Poľane. The storyHistória

The springs were known in the Middle Ages and appear in sixteenth-century accounts of the mineral waters of the Kingdom of Hungary. Organised bathing developed from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and by the nineteenth Sliač was an established spa with a season, a park and a returning clientele.Pramene poznali už v stredoveku a spomínajú ich opisy minerálnych vôd Uhorska zo šestnásteho storočia. Organizované kúpanie sa rozvinulo v sedemnástom a osemnástom storočí a v devätnástom bol Sliač zavedenými kúpeľmi so sezónou, parkom a stálou klientelou.

Its landmark is the Palace, the large sanatorium built on the hill in the 1930s, a confident piece of interwar architecture that still dominates the terrace. After 1948 the spa was nationalised and turned towards cardiac rehabilitation, which remains its speciality.Poznávacím znamením mesta je Palace, veľký liečebný dom postavený na kopci v tridsiatych rokoch — sebavedomý kus medzivojnovej architektúry, ktorý terase dominuje dodnes. Po roku 1948 kúpele zoštátnili a preorientovali na kardiologickú rehabilitáciu, ktorá je ich špecializáciou doteraz.

The airfield below is older than the airbase. As Tri duby it was the airfield of the Slovak National Uprising in 1944, the strip through which Soviet aircraft flew in supplies and a Czechoslovak fighter squadron flew in to join the fighting. It became a military airfield under the Warsaw Pact and is still the home base of Slovakia's fighter aircraft.Letisko pod mestom je staršie než základňa. Ako Tri duby bolo letiskom Slovenského národného povstania — dráhou, cez ktorú v roku 1944 prilietali sovietske zásoby a prilietala aj československá stíhacia letka, aby sa zapojila do bojov. Za Varšavskej zmluvy sa z neho stalo vojenské letisko a dodnes je domovskou základňou slovenských stíhačiek.

What to seeČo vidieť

The spa park on its hill is open to walk through: old trees, the springs, the drinking pavilion and the Palace above them. The water here is unusual for coming out both warm and strongly carbonated — carbon dioxide normally escapes from water at that temperature — and the baths fizz accordingly.Kúpeľným parkom na kopci sa dá voľne prejsť: staré stromy, pramene, pitný pavilón a nad nimi Palace. Tunajšia voda je nezvyčajná tým, že vyviera teplá a zároveň silne uhličitá — pri takej teplote oxid uhličitý z vody bežne uniká — a kúpele podľa toho šumia a perlia.

This is a working medical spa rather than a resort, so the atmosphere is one of scheduled treatments and slow walks. The wooded slopes above the town run on into the Kremnické vrchy with marked paths, and sections of cycle route follow the Hron below the terrace.Sú to fungujúce liečebné kúpele, nie rezort, takže atmosféru určujú naplánované procedúry a pomalé prechádzky. Zvolen's castle and Banská Bystrica's square are both minutes away by train, which makes Sliač an unusually convenient base for a region most people drive through.Zvolenský zámok aj banskobystrické námestie sú vlakom na pár minút, vďaka čomu je Sliač nezvyčajne pohodlnou základňou pre kraj, ktorým väčšina ľudí len prechádza.

Work and industryPráca a priemysel

The spa and the airbase are the two employers that define the town, and neither is ordinary: one runs on health-insurance contracts and cardiac referrals, the other on defence budgets. Most other working residents commute the short distance to Zvolen or Banská Bystrica.Kúpele a letecká základňa sú dvaja zamestnávatelia, ktorí mesto definujú, a ani jeden nie je bežný: jeden žije zo zmlúv so zdravotnými poisťovňami a z kardiologických odporúčaní, druhý z rozpočtu obrany. Väčšina ostatných pracujúcich dochádza na krátku vzdialenosť do Zvolena alebo Banskej Bystrice.

The civil side of the airport has never had a settled timetable. Charter flights come and go with the holiday season and scheduled routes have started and stopped over the years; in recent years the airfield's most visible public role has been as the venue for Slovakia's international air show.Civilná časť letiska nikdy nemala ustálený letový poriadok. Charterové lety prichádzajú a miznú so sezónou a pravidelné linky sa v priebehu rokov opakovane začínali aj končili; v posledných rokoch je najviditeľnejšou verejnou úlohou letiska hostiť slovenské medzinárodné letecké dni.

Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

The Zvolen–Banská Bystrica railway runs through the town, with a stop for the spa, and trains reach either city in a few minutes; buses follow the same corridor along the main road. The airport is on the edge of town, but scheduled flights are not something to plan a trip around.Cez mesto vedie železnica Zvolen – Banská Bystrica so zastávkou pre kúpele a vlakom je to do oboch miest pár minút; po hlavnej ceste v tom istom smere jazdia autobusy. Letisko je na okraji mesta, pravidelné lety však nie sú niečím, na čom by sa dala stavať cesta.
