Hriňová lies in the upper Slatina valley in the Podpoľanie, about ten kilometres upstream from Detva and thirty from Zvolen, with the forested volcanic dome of Poľana filling the northern skyline. The road carries on past the town towards Látky and the Rimavica valley, but it narrows as it goes, and the last shops are here.Hriňová leží v hornej časti doliny Slatiny v Podpoľaní, asi desať kilometrov proti prúdu od Detvy a tridsať od Zvolena, so zalesnenou sopečnou klenbou Poľany na severnom obzore. Cesta pokračuje za mestom ďalej na Látky a do doliny Rimavice, postupne sa však zužuje a posledné obchody sú tu.

What makes the place unusual is its shape. Instead of a compact town there is a small valley centre and then dozens of named hamlets and single farmsteads — the lazy — strung along ridges and side valleys for many kilometres, reached by steep narrow lanes. The municipal territory is one of the largest in Slovakia, and a good part of the population lives well outside anything a visitor would call the town.Nezvyčajný je tvar mesta. Namiesto kompaktnej zástavby je tu malé centrum v doline a potom desiatky pomenovaných osád a samôt — lazov — rozvešaných po hrebeňoch a bočných dolinách na mnoho kilometrov, dostupných strmými úzkymi cestami. Kataster obce patrí k najrozsiahlejším na Slovensku a značná časť obyvateľov býva ďaleko od toho, čo by návštevník nazval mestom.

The storyHistória

This is late-settled country. The slopes above the Slatina were cleared from the seventeenth century onwards by families working outwards from Detva under the Vígľaš estate: every clearing became a farmstead and in time every group of farmsteads a hamlet with its own name. Hriňová grew out of that process rather than out of a single act of foundation, and it became a municipality separate from Detva in the nineteenth century.Je to neskoro osídlený kraj. Svahy nad Slatinou klčovali od 17. storočia rodiny postupujúce od Detvy pod vígľašským panstvom: z každej klčoviny sa stala usadlosť a z každého zhluku usadlostí časom osada s vlastným menom. Hriňová vyrástla z tohto procesu, nie z jediného aktu založenia, a v 19. storočí sa od Detvy oddelila ako samostatná obec.

The living was hard and mixed: sheep and cattle on the meadows, oats, rye and potatoes on thin fields, timber from the beech woods, and grazing rights on Poľana. Isolation preserved the costume, the carving and the shepherds' music of the Podpoľanie for the same reasons it preserved them at Detva, and the two places share one folk culture rather than two neighbouring ones.Živobytie bolo ťažké a pestré: ovce a dobytok na lúkach, ovos, raž a zemiaky na chudobných políčkach, drevo z bučín a právo pásť na Poľane. Odľahlosť zachovala kroj, rezbárstvo aj pastiersku hudbu Podpoľania z tých istých dôvodov ako v Detve — obe miesta majú jednu spoločnú ľudovú kultúru, nie dve susedné.

The twentieth century added an engineering works on the valley floor and a reservoir at the head of the valley, and took away much of the population of the lazy. The young went to Detva, Zvolen and Banská Bystrica, and a large number of the outlying farmsteads are now weekend houses or standing empty.Dvadsiate storočie pridalo strojársky závod na dne doliny a vodnú nádrž na jej hornom konci a odvialo veľkú časť obyvateľov lazov. Mladí odišli do Detvy, Zvolena a Banskej Bystrice a mnohé odľahlé usadlosti sú dnes chalupami alebo stoja prázdne.

What to seeČo vidieť

The centre is plain and mostly modern, and nobody comes for it. The reason to come is the landscape, and it is best seen from the small roads that climb out of the valley: hay meadows cut by hand or by the smallest machines, timber barns, plum and apple orchards, and long views back across the ridges to Poľana.Centrum je jednoduché a prevažne novodobé a nikto sem nechodí kvôli nemu. Dôvodom prísť je krajina a najlepšie ju vidno z úzkych ciest stúpajúcich z doliny: kosené lúky, ktoré zvládne len ručná kosa alebo najmenší stroj, drevené humná, slivkové a jablkové sady a dlhé výhľady ponad chrbty k Poľane.

Poľana is the mountain here — a broad eroded volcano, the largest structure of its kind in the country and a UNESCO biosphere reserve — and marked trails climb from this side into its horseshoe-shaped inner basin and on to the summit ridge. The clearing at Kyslinky, deep inside the massif, is reached from Hriňová. It is proper hill walking: forest most of the way, little water high up, and weather that turns.Horou je tu Poľana — rozložitá, eróziou rozrušená sopka, najväčší útvar svojho druhu v krajine a biosférická rezervácia UNESCO — a značené chodníky z tejto strany stúpajú do jej podkovovitej vnútornej kotliny aj na vrcholový hrebeň. Z Hriňovej sa dá dostať aj na Kyslinky, čistinu hlboko vo vnútri masívu. Je to skutočná horská turistika: väčšinou lesom, hore málo vody a rýchlo sa meniace počasie.

The reservoir on the Slatina above the town is a drinking-water source for a large part of the region, not a leisure lake: bathing and boating are prohibited and the shore is a protected water-management zone. Most people see it in passing on the road towards the Poľana clearings, which is as close as the rules allow.Vodná nádrž na Slatine nad mestom je zdrojom pitnej vody pre veľkú časť regiónu, nie rekreačným jazerom: kúpanie a člnkovanie sú zakázané a okolie je ochranným pásmom vodného zdroja. Väčšina ľudí ju vidí len z cesty smerom k poľanským čistinám a bližšie sa podľa predpisov ani dostať nedá.

Work and industryPráca a priemysel

Farming on the lazy is still work rather than heritage: cattle and sheep, hay off slopes no large machine can take, milk sold on for processing. The sheep's-milk cheeses of this country — bryndza above all, and smoked oštiepok — are a living local trade and not a souvenir, and they turn up at every market in central Slovakia.Hospodárenie na lazoch je tu stále prácou, nie folklórom: dobytok a ovce, seno zo svahov, na ktoré veľký stroj nevojde, mlieko odovzdávané na spracovanie. Ovčie syry tohto kraja — predovšetkým bryndza a údený oštiepok — sú živým miestnym remeslom, nie suvenírom, a objavia sa na každom trhu v strednej časti Slovenska.

Beyond that there is forestry and sawmilling, the engineering works in the valley dating from the socialist decades, and daily commuting to the machinery plant at Detva and on to Zvolen. Tourism is small, seasonal and mostly domestic.Okrem toho je tu lesníctvo a píly, strojársky závod v doline zo socialistických čias a každodenné dochádzanie do strojární v Detve a ďalej do Zvolena. Cestovný ruch je malý, sezónny a prevažne domáci.

Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

Hriňová is reached by road up the Slatina valley from Detva, which sits on the main road east out of Zvolen; buses run that way through the day and are the practical option without a car. The nearest railway is the Zvolen–Lučenec line in the valley below, at Detva or Kriváň. The lazy themselves need a car, a bicycle with low gears, or a long walk.Do Hriňovej sa ide cestou hore dolinou Slatiny z Detvy, ktorá leží na hlavnej ceste na východ zo Zvolena; autobusy premávajú týmto smerom cez deň a bez auta sú praktickou možnosťou. Najbližšia železnica je trať Zvolen – Lučenec v doline pod mestom, v Detve alebo v Kriváni. Na samotné lazy treba auto, bicykel s ľahkými prevodmi alebo dlhú chôdzu.
