Lučenec lies in the Lučenec basin in Novohrad, in the warm low country between the Slovak Ore Mountains and the Hungarian border, roughly sixty kilometres east of Zvolen. The land around it is open and gently rolling, with the volcanic hills of the Cerová vrchovina breaking the southern horizon.Lučenec leží v Lučenskej kotline v Novohrade, v teplej nížinatej krajine medzi Slovenským rudohorím a maďarskou hranicou, zhruba šesťdesiat kilometrov východne od Zvolena. The storyHistória

Lučenec grew as a market town of Novohrad county and took over as its administrative centre after the Ottoman wars had wrecked the castle at Fiľakovo. Its trade was livestock, grain and crafts, and by the nineteenth century it had become the commercial hub of a wide agricultural district.Lučenec vyrástol ako trhové mesto Novohradskej stolice a jej správne stredisko prevzal po tureckých vojnách, ktoré zničili fiľakovský hrad. In 1849, at the end of the Hungarian revolution, the town was burned almost to the ground. What stands in the centre today is therefore mostly later — a nineteenth-century town rebuilt in one push, with the wide streets and solid public buildings that came with that.V roku 1849, na konci uhorskej revolúcie, mesto takmer do základov vyhorelo. The Calvinist church with its tall tower, the town hall and the Novohrad museum and gallery fill the centre — the museum is the place to understand the county, with its archaeology and folk collections. Lučenec had heavy manufacturing in the socialist decades — enamelware, machinery, food and building materials — and most of it did not survive the 1990s. Lučenec is on the railway from Zvolen to Košice, which follows the southern route through Fiľakovo and Jesenské; buses connect it with Zvolen, Banská Bystrica and the border villages.
