People have been coming into this basin for a very long time. The oldest traces are stone tools and spear points found in the Závodie district, left by hunters of mammoth and reindeer around twenty thousand years ago; some of the flint came from what is now Poland, which tells you which way people were travelling. In the Bronze and Iron Ages the heights above the valley carried fortified hillforts — enclosures ringed by a timber wall and an earth rampart, where a whole district's farmers, craftsmen and traders sheltered when there was trouble. The important one stood on Veľký vrch at Divinka, directly above the old trade road along the Váh, and Celtic coins have been dug out of it. Rome never ruled this valley, yet three hoards of Roman coins have been found in Žilina — payment, trade or loot that travelled up that same road.Do tejto kotliny prichádzali ľudia veľmi dlho.
