Žilina's owner in the last of the good years was František Vešeléni; when his conspiracy against Emperor Leopold I failed, the town was confiscated to the crown in 1671. Then came the ordinary disasters: a fire in 1678, plague the year after. Armies belonging to the anti-Habsburg uprisings marched through and plundered as they went — the Žilina suburb was destroyed during Imrich Thököly's rising, and that, not the Turks, is the honest answer to who wrecked it. The Jesuits arrived in 1685 and opened a school six years later, the parish church went back to the Catholics, and Franciscans were brought in to push the re-Catholicisation along. In 1686 the town passed to Pavol Esterházy, and in 1691 it signed an unequal agreement with him under which it surrendered most of its privileges; 2,682 people lived here in 1700, and the plague of 1710–1713 cut that back again.Zemepánom Žiliny v posledných dobrých rokoch bol František Vešeléni; keď jeho sprisahanie proti cisárovi Leopoldovi I. stroskotalo, mesto v roku 1671 prepadlo kráľovi ako konfiškát. Cez mesto tiahli vojská protihabsburských povstaní a cestou drancovali — žilinské predmestie zničili počas povstania Imricha Tököliho, a to je poctivá odpoveď na otázku, kto to tu zbúral; nie Turci. V roku 1685 prišli jezuiti a o šesť rokov otvorili školu, farský kostol pripadol späť katolíkom a na podporu rekatolizácie prišli aj františkáni. Roku 1686 pripadla Žilina Pavlovi Esterházymu a v roku 1691 s ním uzavrela nerovnú dohodu, v ktorej sa vzdala väčšiny svojich výsad; v roku 1700 tu žilo 2 682 ľudí a morové epidémie v rokoch 1710 – 1713 ich počet znova zrazili.
