1542 – 1610 Fifty thousand metres of cloth, and a synodPäťdesiattisíc metrov súkna a jedna synoda

Once the fighting settled, Žilina had the best century it would see for a long time. Markets ran twice a week and there were six fairs a year; at the peak the town held about two hundred craft workshops organised into eighteen guilds — associations that fixed prices and standards and decided who was allowed to practise a trade. A hundred and fifty of those workshops wove cloth, and between them they turned out something like fifty thousand metres of red and white woollen cloth a year from local sheep. The Reformation took hold here: a Protestant academy is recorded in 1542, teaching foreign students as well as local ones, and in 1665 Ján Dadan opened a printing house on today's Bottova street. The largest event of all came on 28–30 March 1610, when the palatine Juraj Turzo — the palatine held the highest office in the kingdom after the king — called the Lutherans of Upper Hungary to a synod at Žilina that gave them a church organisation of their own under three superintendents, that is bishops.Keď boje utíchli, prežila Žilina najlepšie storočie na dlhý čas dopredu. Trhy sa konali dvakrát do týždňa a jarmoky šesťkrát do roka; vo vrcholnom období pracovalo v meste okolo dvesto remeselníckych dielní združených v osemnástich cechoch — združeniach, ktoré určovali ceny, kvalitu aj to, kto smie remeslo vykonávať. Stopäťdesiat z tých dielní patrilo súkenníkom a spolu utkali ročne asi päťdesiattisíc metrov červeného a bieleho súkna z domácej ovčej vlny. Ujala sa reformácia: v roku 1542 sa spomína protestantská akadémia, na ktorej študovali aj cudzinci, a v roku 1665 otvoril Ján Dadan na dnešnej Bottovej ulici kníhtlačiareň. Najvýznamnejšia udalosť prišla 28. – 30. marca 1610, keď palatín Juraj Turzo — palatín bol po kráľovi najvyšším úradom krajiny — zvolal evanjelikov horného Uhorska na Žilinskú synodu, ktorá im dala vlastnú cirkevnú organizáciu na čele s tromi superintendentmi, čiže biskupmi.
