ŽilinaŽilina

No source says what the Mongols did at Žilina in 1241, and it is more honest to say so than to invent a siege. Archaeologists do find that the main settlement here was destroyed and its church damaged — but they date that to the end of the thirteenth century, two generations too late to be blamed on the invasion. What 1241 certainly did change was royal policy. King Béla IV rebuilt his wrecked kingdom with stone castles and by inviting settlers from the German-speaking lands, offering them town rights to make the journey worth taking — and the town of Žilina, laid out around a market square by colonists from Silesia, is a direct product of that programme. So the Mongols matter here not because they burned the place, but because of what the kingdom did afterwards.
