Žilina had a castle of its own, and for centuries nobody could say where it had stood. It first appears in writing in 1318, when the owner was Matúš Čák Trenčiansky, the magnate who ran most of north-western Hungary as though the king did not exist; it is named again in 1397 and for the last time in 1454, and after that it drops out of the records and out of the townscape completely. In 2008, digging foundations for the Mirage shopping centre on the terrace below Mariánske námestie, builders hit the base of a massive tower, identified as the remains of Žilina Castle. The find was kept rather than cleared, and part of it is on show inside the finished building, which opened on 15 November 2010 — whether a shopping centre was the right way to rediscover a castle is an argument the town has not finished having.Žilina mala vlastný hrad a stáročia nikto nevedel povedať kde. V roku 2008 pri hĺbení základov pre nákupné centrum Mirage na terase pod Mariánskym námestím narazili robotníci na základy mohutnej veže, ktoré určili ako pozostatok Žilinského hradu. Nález sa zachoval, nezlikvidoval — jeho časť je vystavená priamo v hotovej budove, ktorá sa otvorila 15. novembra 2010. Či bolo nákupné centrum tým správnym spôsobom, ako znovu objaviť hrad, si mesto dodnes celkom nevyjasnilo.
