On 3 July 1995 Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass on Mariánska hora, on the hillside above the town, during his visit to the young Slovak Republic. The crowd was reported at the time as about 650,000 people — nobody counted them at a turnstile, and pilgrimage figures are always soft, but by any estimate it was the largest gathering the country has held. He raised the church on the hill to the rank of minor basilica. For pilgrims old enough to have been there, 1995 is still the year the other years are measured against, and the first weekend of July is still the biggest pilgrimage in Slovakia.Tretieho júla 1995 slúžil pápež Ján Pavol II. svätú omšu na Mariánskej hore nad mestom, počas svojej návštevy mladej Slovenskej republiky. Zástup vtedy odhadli na približne 650 000 ľudí — nikto ich pri turnikete nerátal a údaje o pútiach bývajú mäkké, no aj podľa najopatrnejších odhadov išlo o najväčšie zhromaždenie v dejinách krajiny. Kostol na vrchu povýšil na baziliku minor. Pre pútnikov, ktorí sú dosť starí na to, aby pri tom boli, je rok 1995 dodnes mierou všetkých ostatných a prvý júlový víkend je stále najväčšou púťou na Slovensku.
