The Habsburgs answered Protestant Hungary with the Counter-Reformation, and in Levoča it arrived in the two usual forms: churches taken back, and a school opened to win the next generation. The Jesuits founded their grammar school in the town in 1672. For the rest of the century Levoča had two religious communities, two school systems and one square between them, and its politics swung with whichever army was nearer — imperial troops out of Vienna, or the Protestant nobles' forces under Imre Thököly, who was born in Kežmarok castle up the road. Towns in that position rarely got to choose a side; they got to pay whichever side turned up.Habsburgovci odpovedali protestantskému Uhorsku rekatolizáciou a do Levoče prišla v dvoch obvyklých podobách: kostoly sa brali späť a otvorila sa škola, ktorá si mala získať ďalšiu generáciu.
