Levoča went over to the Reformation early and stayed Lutheran for generations. That was not only a matter of belief: a Protestant town ran its own school, and Levoča's became one of the good ones, the kind of place where a family in Prešov or Bardejov sent a clever son and where teachers had studied at Wittenberg. Books, arguments and students moved along the same roads as the copper. For a hundred and fifty years the town's religion and the emperor's would not be the same religion, and that fact shaped everything that happened here next.Levoča prijala reformáciu skoro a evanjelickou zostala po celé generácie. Nešlo len o vieru: protestantské mesto si viedlo vlastnú školu a tá levočská patrila k dobrým — takým, kam rodina z Prešova či Bardejova posielala nadaného syna a kde učili ľudia, čo študovali vo Wittenbergu. Knihy, spory aj študenti sa pohybovali po tých istých cestách ako meď.
