In 1550 fire went through Levoča and destroyed nearly all of its Gothic buildings; a second fire followed in 1599. The town was rich enough to rebuild immediately, and it rebuilt in the fashion of its own century. That is why the houses around the square wear Renaissance fronts and flat decorated parapets called attics, which hide the roofs behind them, while the church and plenty of walls under the plaster are still the older Gothic town underneath. It is the thing to look for on the square: a medieval street plan with a sixteenth-century face.
