1871 The railway that went pastŽeleznica, ktorá išla okolo

The Košice–Bohumín railway, the main line across the north of the kingdom, opened in 1871 — and it ran eight kilometres south of Levoča, through Spišská Nová Ves and Poprad. Engineers had followed the flat ground of the Hornád valley, and that ordinary decision quietly ended six centuries of Levoča being the town everything had to pass through. Industry went where the trains were. The population stopped growing, the merchant houses were never pulled down and replaced with something bigger, and the square kept its sixteenth-century face because nobody had the money to modernise it. The town lost the century and kept the buildings.Košicko-bohumínska železnica, hlavná trať naprieč severom kráľovstva, sa otvorila roku 1871 — a viedla osem kilometrov južne od Levoče, cez Spišskú Novú Ves a Poprad. Inžinieri sledovali rovinu Hornádskej doliny a toto celkom všedné rozhodnutie potichu ukončilo šesť storočí, počas ktorých muselo cez Levoču prejsť všetko. Priemysel odišiel tam, kde boli vlaky. Mesto prestalo rásť, meštianske domy nikto nezbúral a nenahradil väčšími a námestie si podržalo tvár zo 16. storočia, lebo na jeho modernizáciu neboli peniaze. Levoča prišla o storočie a zachovala si stavby.
