Some time after 1500 a woodcarver settled in Levoča whose name appears in the town's books between 1506 and 1537 and who is known today only as Master Paul. His workshop made the high altar of St James's: 18.62 metres of carved lime wood standing from the floor to the vault, with the Last Supper in the predella, the wide panel at its base. It is the tallest late-Gothic wooden altar anywhere, and the year usually given for its completion is 1517. Almost nothing personal survives about the man — his link to the altar rests on an epitaph written long after his death, which an art historian pointed out in 1878 — but the work stands where he left it, in the church it was carved for. That is rarer than being tall.
