From 1 January 1949 the whole town lay inside the Tatra National Park, the first national park in Slovakia, whose administration and museum are at Tatranská Lomnica. That is the year the settlements stopped being free to grow as they liked: since then the park decides what may be built, cut or walked on, which is why the high trails close every winter and why there is no new village on this slope. On 20 January 1950 the Tatra mountain rescue service became professional, six paid men under the climber and chemical engineer Vladimír Šimo. The town has been the headquarters of Slovak mountain rescue ever since.Od 1. januára 1949 ležalo celé mesto vnútri Tatranského národného parku, prvého na Slovensku, ktorého správa aj múzeum sídlia v Tatranskej Lomnici. V tom roku prestali mať osady voľnosť rásť, ako sa im zachce: odvtedy park rozhoduje, čo sa smie stavať, rúbať a kadiaľ sa smie chodiť — preto sa vysokohorské chodníky každú zimu zatvárajú a preto na tomto svahu nepribudla nová osada. 20. januára 1950 sa tatranská horská služba stala profesionálnou: šesť platených mužov pod vedením horolezca a chemického inžiniera Vladimíra Šima. Mesto je odvtedy sídlom slovenskej horskej záchrany.
