Tuberculosis had no cure between the wars — only rest, food and clean cold air — and in 1935 the state social insurance company began building the biggest answer anyone in the region attempted. The sanatorium at Vyšné Hágy, at 1,130 metres, is a block 270 metres long with nearly two thousand rooms and five hundred beds; it was the largest institution of its kind in Central Europe. It opened on 2 June 1941, in the middle of the war, and it never became a hotel: it is the national institute for tuberculosis, lung diseases and thoracic surgery to this day. Along with the sanatoria at Tatranská Polianka, Nová Polianka and Dolný Smokovec, it is the reason this town has hospitals in it.Tuberkulóza nemala medzi vojnami liek — len pokoj, stravu a čistý chladný vzduch — a v roku 1935 začala ústredná sociálna poisťovňa stavať najväčšiu odpoveď, o akú sa v regióne niekto pokúsil. Sanatórium vo Vyšných Hágoch vo výške 1 130 metrov je blok dlhý 270 metrov s takmer dvetisíc miestnosťami a päťsto lôžkami; bolo najväčším zariadením svojho druhu v strednej Európe. Otvorili ho 2. júna 1941, uprostred vojny, a hotel sa z neho nikdy nestal: dodnes je to národný ústav pre tuberkulózu, pľúcne choroby a hrudníkovú chirurgiu. Spolu so sanatóriami v Tatranskej Polianke, Novej Polianke a Dolnom Smokovci je dôvodom, prečo sú v tomto meste nemocnice.
