For seventy years Smokovec was the only address in the mountains: a handful of wooden houses where guests came to drink the water, walk a little and go home. By about 1830 it was known as Schmeks and had become a fashionable summer stop for families from the Spiš towns and from further down the kingdom. In the early 1860s Juraj Rainer built a small shelter up at Hrebienok, above the settlement at the edge of the forest — the first mountain hut in the Tatras, and the beginning of the idea that you could go up and stay up. Sources differ on the exact year. Začiatkom 60. rokov 19. storočia postavil Juraj Rainer na Hrebienku, nad osadou na okraji lesa, malý prístrešok — prvú tatranskú chatu a začiatok myšlienky, že sa dá vyjsť hore a hore aj zostať. Pramene sa v presnom roku rozchádzajú. Chata tam stojí dodnes, obnovená, a stále v nej nalievajú čaj.
