Start with the weather, because in Orava the weather decides everything else. This is the coldest inhabited country in Slovakia: the growing season is short, frost comes early and stays late, and much of the basin floor in the north is peat bog rather than farmland. For most of prehistory the valley of the Orava river was something people crossed rather than somewhere they stayed — a way over the Beskid mountains towards the Vistula and back. Finds from before the Middle Ages here are scattered and thin, and no early power centre grew up in Orava to compare with Nitra or the Danube towns. Orava is one of the very last corners of Slovakia to fill up with permanent villages, and it fills up late for the simplest of reasons: it is hard.Začnime počasím, lebo na Orave rozhoduje počasie o všetkom ostatnom. Je to najchladnejší obývaný kraj Slovenska: vegetačné obdobie je krátke, mrazy prídu skoro a odchádzajú neskoro a veľká časť dna kotliny na severe je skôr rašelinisko než pole. Väčšinu praveku bola dolina Oravy miestom, ktorým sa prechádzalo, nie miestom, kde sa bývalo — cestou cez Beskydy k Visle a späť. Nálezov spred stredoveku je tu málo a sú roztrúsené; nijaké staré mocenské centrum, aké poznáme z Nitry či od Dunaja, na Orave nevzniklo. Trvalými dedinami sa zapĺňa ako jedna z posledných častí Slovenska — a neskoro z celkom jednoduchého dôvodu: je tvrdá.
